Which version of kontact are you using?

Check ~/.kde (or .kde4)/share/apps/kabc looking for std.vcf.  The numbered 
files there are backup ones, is of std.vcf is blank, rename std.vcf_1.  
Similarly, check the korganizer folder for std.ics.  This does not 
automatically backup, so it is wise to use your own backup solution for this.

I've never seen it with korganizer.  An old version of the addressbook used to 
lose them regularly, and those backups saved my sanity more than once :-)

Unless we can find some clue as to the cause, there's not much you can do, 
other than setting a cron job to backup the two files nightly.
