no, I didn't touch the global KMail.desktop and Kontact.desktop files.  
Instead, I did put patched versions of both into  
~/.local/share/applications.

I've now tried again with a patched global KMail.desktop (commented  
out the X-KDE-ServiceTypes line) and it works! I don't understand why  
this way it does work but doesn't work with my local .desktop files.
