Notify taskbar icon

Hi
My internet connection failed and in getting it up and running again the only 
thing missing is the Kmail notify 'new mail' icon in the task bar (the one 
that shows the number of new messages)

I tried on Settings->Configure Notifications->Advanced tab and checked 
the 'Mark taskbar entry' but nothing happens - is there another way to start 
it or put it in the Kontact/Kmail startup?

Any help appreciated
