Kaddressbook corruption

Today I opened Kaddressbook and had only about 8 contacts, as opposed
to the 400 contacts that I had yesterday! To troubleshoot I opened
~/.kde/share/apps/kabc/std.vfc in Kate and found it started off with
some javascript, then what looks binary data, then 8 or so contacts,
then XML data which looks like it might be related to Akregator. I
will restore one of the backup files (I made no changes in the last
few days) but I would like to know what may cause this. If a dev would
like to examine the std.vcf file I can send it in personal email.
