I just tested...I renamed the borked calendar and restarted Kontact.  The same thing happened on the very first Event I created.  It creates fine, but editing it (I right click on it...does that affect it?!!) makes it disappear.  

So it doesn't seem to be connected to the corrupt std.ics file.

I'm on a PAE kernel...could that make a difference?
