There is always a delay.  The actual length does seem to vary a bit, but it is 
always considerable.

My smtp password is stored in KMail configuration, although the wallet is 
probably used for the connection to the server.  Is that connection opened 
every time I read folders or send messages?  Reading folders seems a little 
slower than in earlier versions, but not enough to be a problem.  FWIW, the 
wallet is always open while I am working.
