I think the KMail implementation is more a specific one. Thunderbird
just uses "online" IMAP and downloads folders, when you select them as
"offline available". So it just caches data for the folders you want
to. On the other hand every folder you are in, is activly observed as
if you would read it online. Together with IMAP IDLE you get mails
shown as new as they arrive on the IMAP server.

In KMail you have online IMAP without any cache and dIMAP just from
the cache. You have to decide. IMAP IDLE is a different topic and will
hopefully get in as Akonadi takes over.
