Well, remember that I am already authenticated, because I'm connected to their 
network, so it seems reasonable to me, as does the need to authenticate when 
I'm not attached to their network.  Using their webmail is the other 
alternative, and again that means that I attach to their network by a diferent 
means and am thus authenticated.  Either way, they aren't leaving the service 
open to all-comers.
