I tend to leave KMail/Kontact open, especially when I'm "web surfing" and doing other things or overnight so I can check email in the morning w/o having to wait for it to download. Typically, I can go back to Kmail/Kontact and hit F5 to refresh and it'll reconnect. Occasionally I have to close KMail/Kontact and shut down Akonadi (sometimes I have to kill Akonadi to get Kmail/Kontact to start up properly, but that's another issue) and reopen KMail/Kontact in order to get Imap to work. As I mentioned I've had occasional issues with Akonadi apparently being "hung" in the background after closing Kmail/Kontact and when I open Kontact the next time, it opens up, but hangs and doesn't respond to attempts to navigate, sometimes the message preview window is garbled (looks like a videotape playing while being fast-forwarded) and I have to close it, kill Akonadi and restart it, sometimes two or three times to get it working properly.
