I can't say it's a frequent occurrence, but KMail does occasionally get stuck, and closing it down is necessary. On those occasions it often doesn't shut down cleanly. I use System Activity monitor, and often can see a large pile of processes left over. I kill them, then restart KMail, and that always works. Of course it 's only a work-around.
