Not knowing the status of OpenSUSE, I can't answer definitively, but the
kaddressbook maintainer has backported a fix that allows the use of old
distribution lists. I have just tested, using a list created some time back
to send a message to myself at three different addresses. All arrived. I'd
suggest that you set up a similar test group, and check that it works. If it
does, you can simple carry on creating your new group. Starting to add a name
brings up a list of possible matches, so it's not as bad a job as you think.
Having said that, don't forget to organise backing up the contacts.

Drag and drop them. Copying may be safer than moving - at least until we are
sure that it's not only stable, but that we understand it well enough.

If the addresses are there they are available to KMail.
