Googlemail works very erratic in combination with IMAP. The problem is 
that Google has its own idea of how you should deal with your mail. From 
Google's perspective folders are collections of messages satisfying 
certain criteria, e.g. messages with the same tag. From IMAP's 
perspective moving a message is nothing else but a copy followed by a 
deletion. Now, if you copy a message to a folder Google does in fact set 
the folder's tag on this message. I have no idea how Google handles the 
deletion of a message. Following Google's logic the deletion of a 
message will remove the tag corresponding to the folder containing the 
message. Therefore the message will vanish from the folder, but it 
should still be available in the All Messages folder (or whatever it is 
called). I'd look in this folder for the message you are missing.

I'm sure other users who are actually using Googlemail will be able to 
fill in the gaps in my description.
