HOWTO? building kmail2 and new akonadi

How does one play with kmail2 these days?  I've found various things
via google but they all seem to be out of date.  Do I checkout trunk
to get kmail2?

I'd like to build a alternate kdepim and play around.  Its a Ubuntu
Lucid box running the backported KDE 4.5.0
