This depends very much on what you understand under a "base KDE system". 
If this "base KDE system" includes any applications that handle data 
like addresses, calendars, email or communication in general then you 
are probably out of luck.

Also I will not tire of pointing out that a special Akonadi based 
version of Kontact runs well on smart phones which are less powerful 
than your netbook. So your concerns about Akonadi are largely unfounded.
