Gmail tagged email addresses

I'm trying to set up KMail to use my Gmail account with additional tags for 
mailing list use e.g. [email protected], but whenever I try to send an 
email everything from the '+' to the '@' gets deleted and arrives at the other 
end as just [email protected]. I'm sure I've set everything up correctly, but 
am I missing something obvious?

I've tried sending from the same email address, but with a different SMTP 
server and that gets through fine.
