This is *exactly* what LDAP is all about. LDAP provides access to distributed directory services. It is already used for address books (e.g. in Evolution, Thunderbird, OpenOffice.org, Lotus Notes, Outlook, ...) user management, PAM authentication, management of SMTP, POP and IMAP data, ... LDAP is the de-facto industry standard for these kind of things. Adapting a quote from Henry Spencer: "Those who do not understand LDAP are condemned to reinvent it, poorly."
