Do you have check intervals configured for those you currently want to check 
at startup?
If so how long are they?

My setup does not check on startup but all accounts which I wish to check 
regularily have check intervals confiugred between one and five minutes, thus 
almost immediately checking for new mail after KMail startup.

Actually has the nice side effect that I get a kind of priorization, i.e. my 
main account has one minuted check interval and thus gets triggered first 
after startup before my secondary account with 3 minutes does.
