It does, and it can be set to 1, 2, 3, or 4, but to no other number.

I try to avoid made-up names like "plasmoid", but the list of layouts in 
the panel shows only four names. The fifth one that appears in Configure 
Desktop is absent.

Nevertheless, I am pretty confident that there is no way to use a fifth 
layout except to swap it for one of the other four, which is too clumsy 
a workaround to bother with.

That four layouts are possible is a great advance of the two-lsyout 
limitation with which Windows (at least XP, the most recent one I have 
seen) is still burdened. Maybe a day will come when some Linux committee 
will wake up to the fact that four is also not enough for everybody.
