spellchecking in KMail 2 nonworking

Can someone else either confirm or correct my error in observing that 
spellchecking in KMail2 is not working? The box in compose window menu 
"options" is ticked, I am using plain old UK or US English but can write 
whatever gibberish w/o any check taking place
