KMail issues

I've started having issues with KMail 2 recently, and I suspect it's related to a MYSQL update last weekend. For some strange reason, if I shut down KMail or it crashes, whenever I start it back up, I *always* get an error that Akonadi is not running. HOWEVER, if I open up a console window and type "ps aux | grep akonadi" I get about 2 dozen results, which tells me that it *is* in fact, running. What's the deal here??? Is KMail starting up too fast for Akonadi??? I STILL don't get the need for a freakin' database for email, but maybe I'm just old fashioned that way! Any idea when we'll have a *stable* KMail 2?????
