Humble Pie once more. It actually DOES work to a large extent (have not 
tried all possibilities).

I had to set "Search in all folders" to get it working (that is not 
default setting) and if using "To" or "from" had to put at least the 
full part before the @ sign, eg o.sinclair of [email protected].

I can live with that though I have no idea why "search in this folder 
and subfolders" is dead. At least it seems to be, will continue 
experimenting.

This is Kubuntu 12.04 w KDE 4.8.3
