Of course.

I would not like that either. From a user point of view it does not matter 
where mails are stored. They just need to be viewable, readable, 
answerable and so on in the client.

With KDEPIM 4.4.5/4.4.11 in Debian I did not have a mail loss since - well 
I can´t remember. There have been some index related issues in earlier 
versions, mostly in KDE 3 AFAIR.
