I have fired up Thunderbird with the same gmail account as Kmail to do some 
comparisons. Interestingly, so far its a *lot* slower to sync than kmail is 
and the search is much worse for accuracy.

To be fair I'll need to give it overnight for a proper comparison, but so far 
its not looking very good.
