Markdown support in KMail

Hello, all
There seem to have been some efforts to support a markdown-like markup in 
kmail, the attached screenshot has some examples, namely for *bold*, /italics/ 
and _underlined_. But this markup has not many features and is not compliant 
with [the most commonly used markdown convention]
(http://daringfireball.net/projects/markdown). I wondered if it was something 
that was easily improvable by users (that is, editing a syntax highlighting 
config file), or if it needs to be handled 
by actual developers
