I now tried this with two IMAP accounts, configured differently in caching 
just to be sure.

I get the behavior described by you when I chose "send later". I do not get it 
when I have the mail sent right away. Then the sent mail ends up in the IMAP's 
sent-mail folder.

Are you seeing this for both kinds of sending?

Same version of KMail, on Debian/Unstable.
