GMail's imap server has its ideosyncrasies, but none of the all the imap MUAs I've used has shown this particular issue (Claws, Sylpheed-Claws, Thunderbird, Apple Mail, Evolution).
I can only hope it's not a regression due to newly overdogmatic adherence to some imap standard ...
