The use of a DB store is a separate issue. It was mostly a scape goat though. A uniform data access API was a really nice evolution, the central access through a service basically a requirement. The initial goal was to be able to serve the PIM needs of any application even allow for third party developers to create specialized user interfaces. I think Zanshin is the only example for the latter that has ever been released but I might be missing some others. It is of course understandable that having it simply as a private, internal component makes the maintainability a lot easier, but as someone who is still hooked to the initial idea it is still quite a sad change.
