I vaguely recall seeing an architectural diagram showing the use of a central repository from which the PIM utilities would query and/or persist data. This is a standard architecture. What's natural is to use a database to implement the central repository. Where things seemed to have gone wrong was implementing the access layer. For some reason, it appears a simple query translated into physically 100's if not 1000's of queries. Given the egregious performance issue, to me it should have been pretty simple to resolve the problem. As a database person, I probably would not have advocated using a DBMS for this case because when things go wrong, it's a bit cumbersome for the lay user to troubleshoot.
