I vaguely recall seeing an architectural diagram showing the use of a
central repository from which the PIM utilities would query and/or
persist data.  This is a standard architecture.

What's natural is to use a database to implement the central
repository.

Where things seemed to have gone wrong was implementing the access
layer.

For some reason, it appears a simple query translated into physically
100's if not 1000's of queries.  Given the egregious performance
issue, to me it should have been pretty simple to resolve the problem.

As a database person, I probably would not have advocated using a DBMS
for this case because when things go wrong, it's a bit cumbersome for
the lay user to troubleshoot.
