It may be possible to develop support for the binary protocol into Qt4 based libs, but no one did it. And I remember some longer mail or blog post by Daniel or one of the other KDEPIM developers explaining on why that is. I think it was a mail in this mailing list. If you want to use KF5 akonadi then also use KDEPIM 5. You can compile that from source with kdesrc-build to. And that is what I am using and what is working nice enough.
