I saw this regularly when I was still heavily using certain IMAP 
servers/accounts which seem to have caused KMail to get stuck somehow.

When it happens, then I shutdown KMail with the following dbus call

qdbus org.kde.kmail2 /MainApplication org.kde.KApplication.quit
