... wouldn't that mean that akonadi can have all kind of trouble as soon as 
the mail servers are not on the same physical lan? Which in fact I can confirm, 
sort of: my desktop at home talks to the mailserver via 1gbit ethernet, no 
trouble. my latop, when it is at home, has no trouble. when I'm elsewhere and 
connecting through vpn via whatever shady wifi is available: things go less 
smoothly.

Connections "over the internet" drop all the time... hotel wifi being crap.... 
cellular data changing towers... etc etc etc.
