One last thing I wanted to share about my email archiving experience: Kontact/Kmail/KDEPIM is now amazingly responsive! The experience reminds me KDE 3.x days. Truly, Kmail became very snappy after the size of my total 5 IMAP accounts (4 gmail + 1 outlook.com) decreased significantly via archiving (i.e. downloading the emails from servers older than 90 days and also deleting them from the servers). I would humbly recommend this to those struggling with akonadi for a much more sleek Kontact/KMail experience, if you can afford keeping older emails only locally.
