A few weeks ago, there has been a regression which caused all kinds of update 
problems, but it has been fixed in the meantime. I'm wondering whether your 
version is the one with the regression. Maybe you can give akonadi/KMail from 
Gentoo unstable (or whatever it's called) a try.
