Yeah, it could make a good first approximation if it could be launched from Kontact or whatever KDE PIM app you're using (and if the abort feature worked 100% of the time!). I've also been able to unblock more delicate situations with it, IIRC deleting emails that no longer showed up in KMail, via the browser feature.
