 Some months ago with a new Linux install I coukd not find the ~/mail 
directory where I was used to finding my collection of maildir files.

But eventually I tracked it down to ~/.mail.directory, even though 
Kmail's 
setup specified ~/mail.
   So I just set up a symlink ~/mail pointing to it.
   
Not come across any other instance of that on 3 different PC's, so how it 
happened is still a complete mystery...
