I agree with Anders.  But if you insist on using Kmail, you might give the 
Kmail handbook a try.  I did that some 10 or 20 years ago, after spending 
years wrestling with other windows and linux mail programs.  I have used Kmail 
ever since. Kmail on Debian is very good.
