And POP3 has been causing KMail problems for years, not least because none of 
the devs have POP3 accounts to test it on, or so I read once.

I've had to set up my own little IMAP server on my LAN, which fetches the mail 
every five minutes and serves it as IMAP to KMail here. That works much better.
