Sorry, I mistyped here, it should read:

In the local subscriptions the folders are *not* shown.

I created now for the same imap server account a second account in mail under 
a different name. There the new folders are shown as well. So I have now an 
account where the new folders are not shown and an account where the new 
folders are shown. I don't know yet what happens if I create new folders in 
the new Kmail account though, I wanted to let the synchronization complete 
first.

It seems to me that this is a kmail issue. If somebody is interested in more 
detailed debug info, please let me know what you need. Otherwise I will delete 
the disfunctional version of the imap account in a few days.
