I expect, that you are catch bug https://bugs.debian.org/1031770. A security 
fix of MariaDB changed the way they return their internal version, that break 
Akonadi.

I'll have this bug on my TODO list, but well I'm on vacation... But the next 
days I' try to understand the issue in depth and try to find a solution with 
MariaDB people.
