email already read shows as unread when checking mail

This morning kmail showed as unread over a hundred 
emails going back to early January, even though I 
have already read them.  This has been a problem for 
years and, though I love it, I may have to quit using 
kmail if I can't fix.  I use Debian and kmail 5.15.3.
