Hi Kmail / KDE PIM teams,

Didi Hoffmann, a colleague working on software's energy consumption, 
wrote to ask if KMail would be interested in participating in a project 
from the German Federal Environmental Foundation.

Green Coding Solutions are doing excellent work in the green software 
and energy consumption space. I'd be happy to help out if KMail and KDE 
PIM teams wanted to work with them.

Hey

I'm Didi from Green Coding Solutions (green-coding.io). We are a small 
team from Berlin working on reducing the emissions of software.

For a research project with the German Federal Environmental Foundation 
we are measuring the environmental impact of all major software 
categories and want you to be included in the project. Hope this caught 
your interest

The research project:

We run Energy ID, a public, open source database that benchmarks the 
energy consumption, CO2 footprint and Green Software Foundation SCI 
metric of widely used software. Essentially a "software bill of 
materials" for energy. You can see it here:

What we try to achieve:

We measure software by so-called “usage scenarios" that represent how 
people actually use it, because the realistic usage scenario is what 
determines a meaningful energy number. As a next step we are now going 
to measure email clients.

We would love to have KMail on board!

Before we measure anything, we'd value your input: what does typical 
usage look like? Do you have some analytics? For instance, how many 
accounts a typical user has, roughly how many messages per day, IMAP vs 
POP, how often it syncs or checks mail, HTML vs plain text, use of 
search, filters, encryption, and so on. Even a few sentences describing 
your "typical user" would help us build representative scenarios rather 
than guessing.

Who is already on board?

We already have Tools and Communities from the Open Source Space 
included in the research project included: Nextcloud, curl, MySQL, 
PostgreSQL, Wagtail, …

Let us know.

If this turns out to be interesting for you, there's a natural next 
step: measuring your energy use continuously over time, the way 
Nextcloud [0] already does with our tooling.
