Hi,

Attached is today's IRC meeting log.
Ines said she is willing to work on the databae.
I suggest she looks into it and maybe posts here some tasks to be done if she
needs help.
Lisiane proposed to look into the website translation scripts and see what
could be done here.
The log will help you to better understand our needs.
Any new idea is welcome, any article/tutorial is welcome!

Cheers,

annma

[12:55:23] <frauke> because I think we should try to stick to our style
[12:55:32] <Ines> I agree
[12:55:55] <frauke> chowells6234: where is your tutorial again? I forgot it again :)
[12:56:05] <chowells6234> kde.org/media/readme.php
[12:56:15] <frauke> chowells6234: thanks :)
[12:56:51] <frauke> Ines: maybe you want to read that. and if you have questions about it you can ask me or chowells6234, I guess
[12:57:03] <Ines> printing...
[12:57:18] <frauke> :)
[12:57:45] <Ines> oh it's a basic php manual + a bit of policies
[12:57:52] <Ines> alrighty will read
[12:58:00] <frauke> Ines: how will be the start...first the database and when that is ready the webinterface ?
[12:58:28] <Ines> yes, you build from there
[12:59:03] <Ines> because you work with database entities
[12:59:30] <frauke> very well
[13:00:03] <frauke> I don't know, maybe you got some mail from Katrin, she could help you with the db, if she has time
[13:00:57] <Ines> I only need help understanding the scenario
[13:01:29] <frauke> that's no problem. I will answer all your questions. We'll figure out how it should work :)
[13:01:48] <Ines> I will probably bug whoever volunteers to explain me how things usually work in the developer/maintainers/$foo in KDE
[13:02:05] <Ines> and I'll build that
[13:02:56] <frauke> I think you'll find your answers :)
[13:03:49] <frauke> the connections between developers/maintainers/contributors aren't that hard to understand, I guess
[13:04:21] <frauke> just ask what you want to know
[13:04:27] <Ines> never been one of those so I guess this is a pretty good project to start belonging somewhere
[13:05:58] <frauke> good, any other questions or organizing about the database?
[13:06:47] <Ines> I will probably read everything I have and send an email to the list
[13:06:53] <Ines> is that ok?
[13:06:56] <frauke> sure
[13:07:47] <frauke> So, should we discuss the translation as well?
[13:08:00] <Ines> ?
[13:08:23] <Ines> translation as in part of the tasks to be handled by the application?
[13:08:29] <frauke> no, no
[13:08:33] <Ines> or as in "let's translate"
[13:08:39] <frauke> the translation of the website
[13:08:42] <Ines> aaahh
[13:08:45] <Ines> sure
[13:09:10] Signoff: chowells6234 (Remote closed the connection)
[13:09:32] <frauke> damn, I knew it. He quit when I start talking about the translation
[13:09:47] <Tuxy> yes :(
[13:10:15] <frauke> how long will we have to wait vor chowells to write the shell script?
[13:10:57] <Tuxy> how does it work then anyways?
[13:12:08] <frauke> with the help of the shell script everything on the website that stands in the code between <i18n> tags will be copied into a .pot file
[13:12:36] <frauke> this .potfile can be translated then. for every language there will be a .po file then
[13:12:48] <Tuxy> ah, I see
[13:12:53] <frauke> Lisi_meeting could explain things much better then me :)
[13:13:00] <Tuxy> :)
[13:13:23] <frauke> but our problem is the shell script
[13:13:49] <frauke> we are waiting nearly a half year now and it is still not ready
[13:13:58] <annma> yes, that's bad
[13:14:31] <frauke> we should think about a way to get the script, maybe without his help
[13:14:52] <Tuxy> but how? is there somebody else who could do it?
[13:14:58] <annma> without his help will be very difficult, he is the only one who knows that stuff
[13:15:07] <frauke> that's true
[13:15:09] <Ines> couldn't we ask other translators how they made theirs
[13:15:17] <Ines> and write our own?
[13:15:24] <annma> it's the first time it's being done
[13:15:29] <Ines> aaahh
[13:15:33] <annma> for a website
[13:15:40] <Ines> then how do other people translate their stuff?
[13:15:54] <annma> I guess they edit html pages
[13:16:01] <frauke> we use the i18n system for application
[13:16:03] <annma> I am not sure
[13:16:41] <frauke> the websites of www.kde.org in other languages, are whole new websites, they are not exactely the same site
[13:17:28] <frauke> there is a website in german for example and I asked the webmaster what it is about, and he told me that it is a completly different website with a different domain
[13:18:03] <frauke> and we are the first who have implemented the <i18n> tags in the website code
[13:18:23] <frauke> but without a script that generated .pot files, we can't start the translation
[13:19:17] <frauke> annma: you told me something about a discussion at the www mailinglist, could you tell me again, I forgot most of it, but I think it could be important
[13:19:53] <annma> well, I did not understand everything that was being said
[13:20:18] <annma> but basically chowells does not want another person to do it
[13:20:41] <Ines> but he won't do it either
[13:20:43] <frauke> could you find the thread for me on lists.kde.org?
[13:21:13] <annma> http://lists.kde.org/?t=107314362200002&r=1&w=2
[13:21:36] <annma> it starts here: http://lists.kde.org/?t=107314362200002&r=2&w=2

[13:46:54] <frauke> that's a very long thread...man
[13:47:16] <annma> yes!!!
[13:47:20] <Tuxy> yes :)
[13:53:15] Lisi_meeting is now known as Lisi
[13:53:26] <Lisi> Hi girls - I've already read everything
[13:53:38] <Tuxy> Hi Lisi
[13:53:55] <Lisi> about web site translation: there is no easy way
[13:54:04] <annma> hi Lisi
[13:54:28] <annma> basically we need someone to implement this script
[13:54:33] <Lisi> 2 options: implement i18n entries in PHP code, or translate direct for each language
[13:54:53] <Lisi> Stephen Coolo controls these today in KDE ([email protected])
[13:55:03] <annma> i18n is done but not extracted
[13:55:42] <annma> kdevelop.org does translations though but the easy way
[13:55:57] <annma> one translates directly the html pages
[13:58:52] <frauke> ok, I read all the stuff now about the i18n translation, the whole thread on kde-www
[13:59:38] <frauke> unfortuately I have to leave soon. But I'll be back in 90 min. I don't know if you all can wait here
[14:00:04] <annma> not too long
[14:00:05] <frauke> but I think that there are three possibilities for the translation problem
[14:00:28] <frauke> first one: we wait for chowells to finish the scripts
[14:01:11] <frauke> second: try to figure out, what the scripts are all about and do it ourselfs or with the help of the www people
[14:01:53] <frauke> third: translating without i18n, maybe while using gettext directly or while storing every page in all translated languages
[14:03:33] <frauke> we can try to get the stuff from chowells, but I don't think that he will share his scripts with us
[14:04:08] <annma> yes but it was meant to be extended to all kde sites
[14:04:21] <frauke> annma: the last message at the thread is the important one
[14:04:24] <annma> that was the point of Chris doing it
[14:04:33] <frauke> I know, and I would like to see that working
[14:04:36] <annma> let me read it again
[14:05:42] merrykju is leaving. I think I'll read the log later on (too tired)
[14:06:12] merrykju waves
[14:06:36] <annma> bye!!!
[14:06:42] <Tuxy> bye merrykju
[14:06:51] <annma> frauke: it seems quite complicated...
[14:06:58] annma is not a script person
[14:07:16] <merrykju> :)
[14:08:29] <frauke> annma: it is complicated. the first script espescially. but there must be a way to do it (not automatically though). But I think we could creata a po file by using gettext manually
[14:08:38] <frauke> merrykju: *wink*
[14:09:35] <frauke> annma: but I don't know how yet. I would like to talk to the www guys about it
[14:09:56] <annma> yes
[14:10:03] <annma> (it's your turn to try)
[14:10:05] <annma> ;)
[14:10:50] <frauke> I won't post their mailinglist ;-)
[14:11:03] <annma> lol
[14:11:18] <frauke> We maybe need a women who knows something about shell scripts though
[14:11:31] <annma> yes -> pointing to merrykju
[14:12:27] <frauke> annma: yepp...good idea
[14:12:45] <Tuxy> so you are thinking of doing it without chris?
[14:13:06] <frauke> Tuxy: no, but I am thinking about finding a solution
[14:13:08] <annma> Tuxy: maybe he
[14:13:19] <annma> 'll get into gear when he sees that
[14:13:26] <frauke> because he told me he write the script before I started to study, 6 months ago
[14:13:40] <Tuxy> yes
[14:13:46] <annma> Tuxy: we already asked and asked Chris
[14:14:16] <Tuxy> annma: I know and I don't know how he can stand that any longer not doing it
[14:14:22] <frauke> I would like to work with him, but if he wrotes something to the www ml like " I'll try when I'm not drunk", I can't take that seriously
[14:15:04] <annma> yes, that's just being childish and irresponsible
[14:15:20] <frauke> anyway, I have to leave to get the bus. I'm back in an hour, hopefully. But if you are gone, please send a complete log to the ml. Annma would you do that?
[14:15:37] <annma> ok
[14:15:54] <annma> see you later
[14:15:55] <Tuxy> frauke: ok, and don't forget to say hello to sven from me :)
[14:16:02] <frauke> I'll try to hurry, but when I don't make it, we can discuss on the ml
[14:16:09] <frauke> Tuxy: I won't
[14:16:12] <frauke> cya all
[14:16:18] <annma> :) bye
[14:16:21] <Tuxy> bye frauke
[14:16:26] <Lisi> bye

[14:35:45] <Lisi> so ... we've decided something about translation site?
[14:35:49] <Tuxy> One: sorry, I don't know - that's not as similar to french

[14:36:07] <One> Tuxy: :-)
[14:36:12] <Tuxy> One: :)
[14:36:12] <annma> Lisi: we would need to know if someone is up to ake a script
[14:36:20] <annma> make a script
[14:36:39] <annma> I am totally unskilled in that
[14:38:10] <Lisi> What the script exactly have to do? Just extract i18n() entries and make pot files, or I missed something?
[14:40:17]  Signoff: One ("WebChat -> www.vIRCio.org")
[14:44:38] <annma> I think it's that
[14:45:04] <annma> and how do we link all the translations
[14:45:10] <annma> to the main website
[14:53:31] <Lisi> Hummm ... I don't know, but I can look for something
[14:54:03] <annma> :) that would be good
[14:54:23] <Lisi> I have to go know - next week I post something in the list, ok?
[14:54:25] <Lisi> Bye all!
