You can install it wherever you want (usually it's /usr/local) it only needs 
to be in your PATH.

This is only needed if you want to run CVS versions of KDE and if you want to 
checkout sources from CVS regularly. 
BTW, precompiled packages of all major distributions usually also install 
seperatly, so if you are only after a KDE install, that is probably the way 
then compiliation from scratch.
