centipede problem finding required jar

I have recently downloaded centipede.
I want to build a little test application of my own. 
All sources compile nicely except the TestCase that needs junit.jar.
I put the junit.jar in the lib directory. ${lib.dir} is pointing to this
directory.
If I put junit.jar in the $CLASSPATH variable manually, all is fine.
What went wrong?
