Have you read this page? http://barcode4j.krysalis.org/embedding.html It should tell you how to create barcodes as bitmap images. If you need to find out what MIME types to use (and which are supported), you can run the barcode.bat batch file without parameters and you should get a list of supported MIME types in your environment. You can also use short format names (for example "png") instead of the MIME types. Barcode4J contains an adapter for a number of codec libraries. If you're working with JDK 1.4 or later you will have JPEG and PNG support. For TIFF support you will need an additional codec (from the JAI image library for example. Take the JAR for the ImageI/O API). I suggest you try to work with PNG, as TIFF may be a bit cumbersome to get working and JPEG only provides lossy compression with results in poor quality of the barcode. If you don't manage don't hesitate to write again in German if you've got trouble expresing yourself in English. I will translate for the other readers.
