I've made private modifications to the FOP 0.20.5 release that I can't
upload to the main codebase since we are in a code-freeze for that
branch. I will see to it, however, that FOP 1.0 (whenever it's ready for
a first release) will have this functionality. Even today it wouldn't
show that garbled kind of human-readble part, but the rest of the layout
engine is not ready for day-to-day use, yet. This needs some more time.

So I'm not talking about a new release of FOP, but rather about a
private fork, a work-around that I could offer you if your work-around
doesn't work and if you're willing to work with an inofficial codebase.

Right, save that a date for the next release cannot be given as the
redesign is still very much work-in-progress. You will have to live with
the work-around for a while.
