100% agree.

But it took me a while to find the place where this behaviour is 
controlled. I finally found it at lib/liblex/lex_esqlc/compile_c.c, line 
5991.

What do you think, should I "hardcode" enabling compile time convert 
here (by calling A4GL_set_compile_time_convert(1)) or make this 
configurable via a new environment variable?

I would prefer the 2nd option (with a default of "no compile time 
convert"), because I'm not sure if this would break other peoples 
code...
