I am not familiar enough with 4GL to discover what I am doing wrong with the
DISPLAY statement but I could not get the information to stay on the screen.

I ended up using a PROMPT statement instead.  That revealed that the st_stock
variable contains on the letter S

   st_stock=: S

Which is no doubt the source of the error.  Now the question is why it does not
contain the entire SELECT string as it should.
