Identifying canvas items

Hi all,

is there any way (e.g.: a global variable) to get the number of the graphical 
item  in a canvas, which has received a (left or right) mouseclick except the 
key bindings ? Identification using the drawbutton* functions is to 
restrictive for my purpose.

Some hints would be great.
