The last three words might be a very important point!

Do I understand correctly that for using these in C, I need to use exec() in some way to get the desired outcome? (I've some experience with C in Linux but none in OS/400 so far.)

Sounds reasonable. Maybe this is a dumb question but: How did you handle dynamic user profile switching? What you write sounds somewhat like "hard coded" in some way.
